PROVIDENCE, RI—Shawmut successfully completed the new $8.2 million Johnson & Wales University Center for Physician Assistant Studies in Providence, Rhode Island. The Physician Assistant Program educates students to become collaborative practitioners with the respect, empathy, and trust inherent in patient-centered, humanistic healthcare.
Shawmut Design and Construction worked closely with DBVW Architects on this year long project to transform a historic jewelry manufacturing facility into a state-of-the-art education and training center. The 18,000-square-foot building is appropriately located in the growing “Knowledge District” of downtown Providence. The building houses lecture halls with global teleconferencing capabilities, small group conference rooms, a clinical skills lab and a cadaver-based anatomy lab. As the building is located in bustling downtown Providence, all work was performed in a high-traffic space requiring extensive safety measures, as well as dust and noise mitigation to alleviate any disruption to University and community activities.
Rhode Island is continually growing its reputation in the medical community. Johnson & Wales University’s Center for Physician Assistant Studies joins notable medical institutions such as Rhode Island Hospital, Brown University’s Alpert Medical School and Roger William Medical Center.
“It was a privilege to work with Johnson & Wales University again,” said Ron Simoneau, vice president at Shawmut Design and Construction. “Top-tier facilities like the Center for Physician Assistant Studies are essential to provide the best training to the future minds of healthcare. As Rhode Island grows its medical community, we are here to support any construction needs along the way. This is our second major RI healthcare project in 2014. The team also recently completed an extensive renovation for The Miriam Hospital.”
